Adult Education / Life Long Learning Opportunities
An adult Bible study is held every Sunday at 9:45 a.m. in the Peter and Paul classroom. Occasionally special topic speakers are brought in. The discussion is lively and fun. Come join in! No experience necessary.
New member orientation sessions are scheduled several times throughout the year, usually for four Sunday mornings during the 9:45 a.m. Education Hour. Childcare is provided. People are welcome to participate in the orientation before they decide if they would like to join St. James.
Agape Circle is a fellowship of Christian women who meet monthly for Bible study, using Lutheran Woman Today as a foundation of study. Meetings are the third Tuesday of each month, 7:30 p.m. September through May, gathering in circle member's homes. New members are always welcome.
Mary Circle meets the third Wednesday of each month for a Bible study from the Lutheran Woman. This circle financially supports a Maasai school girl in Tanzania and also gives a monthly donation to the NEAR food shelf.
Rebekkah Circle meets the third Wednesday of each month from 9:30 -11:00 a.m. at St. James from September through May. The Bible study is led by one of the pastors. This circle studies a variety of different topics each year. Offering collected is given to local charities as needed.
Over 55's is a group of seniors who meet on the fourth Monday of each month, gathering together for fellowship. Meetings held at church are usually "pot luck" and may include a speaker, film, or special program. The group also enjoys a variety of outings, including trips to the Arboretum, Hennepin Technical Institute, the Old Log Theatre and lunch at the Old Country Buffet. Members take turns planning the meetings and activities. At times the group contributes to special church projects. The dues are $5.00 per year. All over 55 are welcome.
The “Page Turners” Book Club meets the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Books are selected by the members of the group and include both fiction and non-fiction. Goals of the club include to offer a variety of books that people will enjoy, to engage people in discussion, to be open to people’s ideas, to build community, and to seek understanding about faith in all kinds of people.
Luther Seminary Education Site
St. James participates as a contextual education site for first and second year seminary students as well as an internship site for third year students preparing for ordained ministry.
Prayer ministry at St. James involves people turning to God through prayer to care for each other, St. James, the community, and the world.
Prayer requests for joys or concerns are received and then forwarded to dedicated prayers of Hearts United in Prayer. To submit a prayer request, call the church office, or email by clicking here.
The Prayer Ministry Task Force meets the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. to seek God's direction in promoting the practice and power of prayer.
Prayer Shawls are knit with prayers and love from members of the St. James community and then given to those who need to feel God's love wrapped around them.
Men's & Women’s Prayer Groups meet Sunday Mornings at 8:00 a.m. to pray for worship and learning at St. James as well as for individuals and families.
The St. James Church library provides materials to enrich the lives of individuals and supports the total ministry of the church. The library strives to serve as a congregational resource for information, to provide practical educational resources for parents, godparents, and the entire St. James family, and to make available to church members and community materials that will increase effectiveness in Christian service. It provides appropriate resources for children, youth and adults in their faith journey.
The library is self-service, available during church office hours, 8 am - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Sunday mornings the library is staffed by a volunteer to assist with book selection and checkout.
Resources in the library may be checked out by all children of God, and are not limited to only members of St. James.
Books are due in 3 weeks. DVD's, Videos, CD's, and other audio materials (weekly services, etc.) are due in 1 week.
